Christians from the St. Elijah Serbian Orthodox parish in Aliquippa, PA, came together this spring to host a donation drive to benefit FOCUS West Central PA. The parish printed flyers featuring our donation wish list and distributed them after Liturgies during Lent. Parishioners dropped off donations at the church before and after services from Friday, April 12th, through Sunday, April 14th.
Led by Father Branislav Golic and spearheaded by parishioners Chennel Donadee and Christine Vandervort, the initiative collected:
- 361 non-perishable food items (canned foods, pasta, etc.)
- 153 hygiene items (deodorant, toothpaste, feminine products, etc.)
- 35 household items (paper towels, toilet paper, napkins, etc.)
- 348 pieces of new and/or gently-used clothing
- $850 in monetary donations
Not only did the Aliquippa parish collect the donations at their church; they also transported everything directly to the FOCUS office the following Sunday. Three vehicles pulled up to the back entrance of the church hall, filled to their roofs with boxes, bags, and crates.
When we walked into the office the following Thursday, we could not believe the sheer multitude of items donated. It took our office volunteers nearly two full days to update our inventory, and organize and store all the materials brought in. Many of the individuals who came by the office during these days looked on with smiles when they heard of this kindhearted initiative, and gratefully accepted the alms we could give because of fellow Christians like those at St. Elijah.
FOCUS West Central PA would like to thank the parishioners of St. Elijah Serbian Orthodox Church, and their spiritual father, Father Branislav, for their incredible generosity this Lenten season.
Please know that your donations will immediately be put to good use, providing for families in need in Beaver County.
